AAA Calls High Hill Farm A Favorite Escape

We’re always thrilled to find out a magazine or other travel publication plans to mention High Hill Farm. We were especially excited to hear we’d be included in the November/December issue of AAA Texas Journey.

We provide Dallas and Tyler Texas residents with an inviting location for romantic getaways, business retreats and events. The magazine article talked about our vineyard and bungalows, but their main focus was something else we’re proud of — our food.

About AAA Publications

Most people are familiar with the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national association that’s all about travel. When members are on the road, AAA provides roadside assistance if they have a problem. Members also get travel discounts, help with vacation planning and other perks.

AAA exists to encourage travel and exploration. Their magazines are state and regional publications that help people travel better and discover local gems.

The publication’s writers and photographers go off the beaten path. Their goal is to help locals and wayfarers uncover places they’ve never been. They also dig deep to show what goes on behind the scenes at some of the most popular establishments. Plus, each AAA magazine covers automotive and insurance issues so travelers stay safe when they’re on the road.

AAA’s travel coverage has repeatedly received the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism and Western Publishing Association awards. Page through just one issue and it’s easy to see why.

What AAA Said About High Hill Farm

Buen Provecho means “enjoy your meal,” and AAA Texas Journey wants travelers to do just that. Their Buen Provecho section gives readers the dish on food, dining and beverage trends throughout the state. The issue featuring High Hill Farm goes out during the holidays and focuses on the sweet potato.

Traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas recipes instruct cooks to mash this root vegetable and top it with marshmallows. AAA writers and High Hill Farm’s chef both agree it can be so much more. The section’s main photo is of High Hill Farm’s Southern-style sweet potato biscuits and chicken. The magazine’s stunning photography is mouth-watering.

Our Executive Chef John Novak is always coming up with a new twist on old favorites. This brunch dish is no exception.

He encrusts tender chicken breast in sweet potato, candied bacon and candied pecans, lightly fries it and serves it on the biscuit of your dreams. The fluffy, buttery, flaky melt-in-your-mouth goodness will make you almost want to cry. AAA Texas Journey writers recommend pairing this delectable plate with a flute of Schramsberg Blanc de Blanc on our terrace looking out over the swimming pool.

Our romantic restaurant Côte serves the best Sunday Brunch in the Dallas and Tyler Texas area. If that doesn’t sound like the perfect way to start your morning, perhaps you’d prefer other menu options like our Cinnamon Pecan Waffle with Bacon and Fresh Fruit or Breakfast Enchiladas with Potato Hash.

In addition to the food, AAA also praised our private bungalows for romantic getaways, corporate retreats and event hosting. “A favorite escape for Dallasites and Houstonians, High Hill is the kind of spot where playing bocce ball and sipping red wine next to an outdoor fireplace count among the main activities,” the article reads. Those are some of our favorite things too.

What Else is in AAA Texas Journey?

The cover of AAA’s November/December issue pays a colorful tribute to Texas’ rich musical heritage. Bayou City Blues was originally part of a book by Roger Wood that explores the contribution of blues legends Lightnin’ Hopkins, Gatemouth Brown, Big Mama Thornton, The Mighty Oro and Trudy Lynn.

When most people think of today’s Houston, the picture in their minds is of towering skyscrapers, industry pouring through busy seaports and miles of sprawling suburbia. Underneath all that bustle lies the music.

Houston Blues evolved in the Third Ward inside 610 Loop and southeast of Downtown, a community nicknamed “The Tre” It also thrived in The Fifth Ward northeast of downtown and bounded by Buffalo Bayou.

Blues performers were as likely to be found in the swanky Eldorado Ballroom as in run-down juke joints. Their legacy still penetrates Houston culture, and the Texas Journey feature explores it in detail.

AAA Texas Journey also takes readers to Hotel Settles in Big Spring, a 15 story landmark in West Texas with enticing dishes of their own. Their Executive Chef Patrick Dunlop foregoes marshmallow topping on his sweet potatoes too. He prefers to mix them with corn, grilled green onion and shallots. He pairs the resulting medley with grilled apricot-glazed pork loin.

If you’re in Amarillo, the magazine recommends OHMS Cafe and Bar. There, sous-chef Alyssa Van Houten prepares mesquite-smoked sweet potato wedges by coating them in olive oil then generously seasoned with garlic salt, black pepper and aromatic fresh oregano.

A Trusted Source for Travel Advice

AAA is a household name when it comes to travel. They’ve been getting travelers to the United States and Canadian travel destinations since 1902 and printing hotel guides since 1917.

At High Hill Farm, we think our venue, corporate retreat and fine dining restaurant are top-notch, but it’s humbling to be recommended by such a trusted source for travel advice. We’re thankful they included us and hope to continue being a favorite escape for our guests from Dallas, Houston, Tyler and beyond.
